The Latine Professionals Network: Q&A with Julie Gonzalez

When did you join the LPN and what made you interested in participating?
I joined in 2022 when I was new to the area and was looking to connect with others doing similar work and build my community. This seemed like a great place to start. It only took one meeting to know that this space was incredibly valuable and that I wanted to be a part of it.
What has your experience been like as part of the LPN?
Right away, I was impressed by the amount of people who were in the community working in different sectors, but having similar experiences as me in the workplace. With the LPN I found validation in my experience and a place of belonging, where I could share my cultural upbringing and how it's influenced who I am today and feel seen. I've foster so many great friendships from the group and have found support both professionally and personally. I've learned a lot from the group and have really appreciated the professional development opportunities that have come from it.
What is a favorite memory you have from an LPN event or gathering?
Every month we try to do a social gathering. If you ask me, this is where the magic happens. We each take turns coordinating and leading the gatherings, so each of them are a reflection of the members. We do anything from meeting up for happy hour, to a clothing swap at someone's house, to cross country skiing on the levee. Recently, one of our members started a Spanish book club and it's been incredible. Not only is it a place for me to use my Spanish, but it's been a way to process the world through literature and with friends with similar lived experiences.
What impact has the LPN had on you? How has it impacted your sense of belonging and community?
I attribute a lot of my personal and professional growth over the last 4 years to the LPN. I don't think I would have the same impact in the community and in my work, if it weren't for the connections that I've made through the LPN. It has opened so many opportunities for me, including participating on nonprofit boards, joining committees, sharing my work with the multicultural community, and more. It's given me a place to find my confidence and feel supported to take some big leaps, like changing career paths. It's made me feel more connected to my cultural roots and intune with how I can support my community.
